Time Out Market lands in the heart of Barceloneta (Moll d'Espanya) a few days before the America's Cup with the mix of gastronomy and culture that has made Time Out Markets in other European cities so popular. Time Out Market Barcelona is a large 5,250m2 space with views of the city, the marina and the sea. Inside, Time Out's editorially curated, selective offering will feature fourteen kitchens, a full-service restaurant, four bars (two indoor and two outdoor), an event space and a podcast studio.

Undoubtedly, the location of the new Time Out market is one of its great attractions, since with the remodelling of the lower part of the Rambla, the promenade reaches all the way to the sea. In fact, the bridge that extends the promenade to the quay of Spain is called Rambla de Mar. Winding lines and wood, with water on both sides, lead directly to the Time Out Market Barcelona.

Once at the top, the terraces also offer views over the sea and the waterfront. On the Xaloc side there is a bar that offers a quite unprecedented view over the mouth of the Port, Barceloneta, the Moll de Pescadors and the Torre del Relotge. From this terrace you can walk around the Market to the Plaça de l’Odissea, where you can see the area where the Alinghi Red Bull Racing team from Switzerland is preparing for the America’s Cup.

Can it be rented for events?

We spoke to Silvia Nuri, director of Time Out Market. ‘Not really if we mean closing it exclusively. There is a room just for events with capacity for 40 people inside and 20 outside. That is to say, we don’t ‘close’ the space for events, but we can hold events. It is a huge space that in turn has many spaces. For example, we have created a cashless system, cards that can be recharged for the amount the client wants. This way, if you have an event for 100 people, you can provide them with a voucher for a certain amount of money, so that they can spend it as they want inside the market, eat in the kitchen they want, in other words, live their own experience. We can also reserve for example a part of the terrace. In fact, we already have several quotations for groups’.

A proposal based on Time Out’s editorial curation in Barcelona

That’s the beauty of Tome Out Market: its cultural, gastronomic and social proposals are chosen editorially through a long process of selection and tasting, with the aim of identifying the best the city has to offer right now by journalists who know it inside out, and inviting the best talents to join the project.

For this reason, the idea is not only to bring together big names, but also to have emerging chefs from the city and establishments that are especially loved in Barcelona.

The line up of the Time Out Market Barcelona includes some names like the chef Jordi Artal and Fran López, with two Michelin stars, Darvaza with its grilled haute cuisine, the rice dishes of Can Ros Barceloneta or Montster Sushi among others, and with surprises like the stop of the well-known delicatessen Colmado Murria, which opens its second one in 126 years. The new market is sponsored by Estrella Damm and Coca-Cola.

Culturally there will be a continuous year-round programme with local talent such as Drag Queen Sarah Brown -Thursday night-, DJ HAL9000 -Saturday night-, and Just for your Kids, who organise family activities on weekend mornings.

There’s also space for street art on both sides of the market: two of the corner terraces feature street art murals in very different styles, a tribute to Barcelona’s culture by Catalan Marina Capdevila and Basque artist Amaia Arrazola.
