The meetings industry brought more than 28.000 persons in a total of 498 events held in Gerona last year, generating a business volume of some 4.3 million Euros, according to the Gerona Chamber of Commerce.
The number of congresses, conventions and seminars held during last year increased a 9.9% with respect to 2003, while the number of participants increased a 20%. 82% of the meetings in Gerona were concentrated between October and May, confirming that meetings move the leisure tourism season, which has a high concentration in the months of July and August.
According to the study, due the short duration of most of the events, complementary activities to the meetings are scarce, justifying the low expense per person.
Those in-charge of the Tourism of the Chamber considered that this trend will rise, more notably from the moment when the Gerona Congress Centre will operate, which is currently in construction.
