What is ‘NetZero Events’, the international commitment of the MICE industry? What do ChatGPT and artificial intelligence for events mean? Companies still far from defining sustainability targets in MICE
The Spanish branch of events by tlc has a new director, British John Hooker, but the change does not stop there: they are reorganising and show ambition for the coming 18 months: developing a full service agency, as a logical next step of the merger with Brazilian live marketing agency Case. The new head of the Spanish offices (Barcelona and Madrid ) has been involved in events by tlc for more than 10 years and has 35 years experience in events, business mentoring and change management. We talked to him to know more.

As we published recently, the merger united Case (live event company with a strong base in Brasil and Florida) with events by tlc (DMC , strong in Lisbon, Porto, Madrid and Barcelona as well as Brazil). This merger is taking effect in Europe, as the Case live events capability is coming into Iberia: it is already being implemented in Lisbon, and will be coming into Spain over the next 18 months. John will launch the full service agency under the Case brand for the domestic market and events by tlc brand for the inbound interntional market.

The agency has also moved its Madrid office to a city centre location and now operates in a dynamic office environment which has been designed by the team of the Sao Paulo office. After changing the Lisbon office, incorporating outside and inside space, they learned from that exercise and now roll out Madrid. But the change is not only about space design: it incorporates a different approach to working, structures, technology, communication and processes and procedures.  This idea is that the environment allows them to create “skill cells” where teams are focused on a project basis. Flexibility is the key. The office has no more defined desks for individuals; now the focus is on the person and not the desk.  Depending on the day-to-day requirements, teams now work together virtually or physically as a team.

The agency also introduced an internal communications tool, Facebook Workplace in order to have a single platform for their teams in seven offices, including time differences which creates “One Team” breaking down the physical barriers of distance. This provides a single source of audit as all the communications are stored whether written, audio or video which brings efficiencies. They also rationalised their IT infrastructure to support new applications and working processes and procedures.

Another initiative coming is the “Partner Lab” an environment for suppliers and the agency to interact on a regular basis and harnesses the entrepreneurial spirit that resides in many people and in this particular case in “This is part of the Millennial mentality to be inquisitive and have ideas that are relevant to their world but to the world at large” says John who adds “a Plethora of surveys shows talent and talent development is the biggest challenge for our industry today”. Offering a dynamic environment with options for initiative is a way to get the best out of them.
