The Road to Net Zero Event project focuses on these three points:
1. The calculation of the carbon footprint will be calculated at the quotation and at the end of the event. The technology developed together with Creast is integrated into the hotel’s management systems and allows measurements to be made based on information from each hotel and each event. In particular, carbon emissions from accommodation, meeting rooms and, as a novel aspect, food and beverage consumption are calculated, as the tool provides detailed information on the carbon footprint behind each menu.
2. Help event organisers make responsible decisions as they will know first-hand the emissions avoided at their events when choosing the company’s hotels.
3. Meliá Hotels International will offset the carbon footprint of all events held under the Road to Net Zero Events programme.
As José Miguel Moreno, VP Corporate & MICE Sales Strategy at Meliá Hotels International explains, “with this programme, we want to go one step further and create events that not only inspire and connect, but also contribute to a greener planet. That’s why we will work collectively with our clients to offset the carbon footprint of their events, either with an option of their choice or through our emissions offset programme The Planet we Love”. This initiative facilitates the purchase of UN-certified carbon credits to support a selection of projects in developing countries to reduce emissions, with the application of blockchain technology, which ensures the traceability of the entire process.
In a first phase, Road to Net Zero Events is available for large events in a dozen of the company’s hotels in Europe and the Caribbean, such as Meliá Madrid Princesa, Meliá Valencia, Meliá Palma Bay, Meliá Milán, Meliá Paris La Defense, Meliá Frankfurt or Paradisus Palma Real (Dominican Republic), in addition to the aforementioned Meliá Barcelona Sarriá and Meliá Berlin. Over the coming months, new hotels will be added to the programme, with the aim of covering in the medium term all the group’s establishments where the MICE segment has a particularly significant weight.
