Should guests choose where they sit in a business lunch or dinner? It depends. Here are some considerations to bear in mind when deciding whether to assign seats or not in your events…
Type of event
If it is an informal event with a relaxed atmosphere for attendees to enjoy and have a good time, let guests choose where they would like to sit. They will feel more at ease during the event. Assigned seats usually transmit some formality. To give more freedom and also to save time, another option is to just assign the tables but not the seats, so that guests can choose next to whom they would like to sit.
Objective of the event
In a formal networking event, evaluate the potencial interests of each attendee and assign a seat according to these interests. It means more work for the organiser, but it adds value to the event (it is more appropriate for events with a reduced attendance, as a big event would require high time and energy). In the same way, assigned seats help save time as this way guests are quickly seated (be it in a business breakfast or lunch,3), a seating plan placed at the entrance or reception of the event helps to cut waiting time to be seated).
