The 3rd World Sports Tourism Congress (WSTC) brought together experts and world leaders in sport and tourism at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid. Organised by UN Tourism and the Government of the Community of Madrid, with the support of Visit Nayarit and Turkish Airlines. One of the main conclusions was to highlight the transformative potential of sports tourism as an engine for economic growth, social development and sustainability of the territories.

It was talked about:

Innovation: The need to invest in technology to enrich visitor experiences is a reality. Operational efficiency through virtual reality, smart systems, augmented reality, smart venues, personalised recommendations driven by AI can be very powerful tools for improvement in this sector.

Infrastructure: The value of multi-purpose, sustainable sports venues that promote year-round engagement. From environmentally friendly construction and operations to energy efficient technologies, ensuring that sports venues align with global environmental goals and attract conscientious travellers.

Impact of sporting events: Both mega-events and amateurs with a smaller reach play a key role in driving tourism, as community engagement and the generation of economic benefits in destinations is key to driving the work of sports tourism.

Collaboration: The creation of partnerships between governments, local communities and sport entities to address common challenges is now a reality. Collaboration is a key to driving sport tourism globally.

UN Secretary-General for Tourism, Zurab Pololikashvili, said: ‘This Congress, as well as the entire line of activity on Sport Tourism developed by UN Tourism through the Department of Affiliate Members and Public-Private Partnerships, represents the continuation of a path we embarked on several years ago. The World Sports Tourism Congress was designed as a platform to exchange and generate knowledge, showcasing best practices and fostering connections. By working together, we can make Sport Tourism a key driver of economic diversification for destinations around the world’.
