The Barcelona Meeting Total Convention Bureau (BMT-CB) has prepared a study with the aim to analyse the situation of business tourism in the province of Barcelona. According to the study, Spain occupies one of the first world positions both in number of events and participants, and the city of Barcelona is one of the most atractive meetings destination in the world.

The report, prepared by BCF Consultores, is the first study about business tourism in the provincial area. The base of the analysis has an inventory of more than 500 venues from the 310 municipalities of the Barcelona province, except for Barcelona city, who have provided the data about the events celebrated during 2004.

Last year, nearly 9.500 events were celebrated in the province of Barcelona, with the participation of more than 360.000 persons. Of the 310 municipalities, 65 have business tourism activity, both meetings (congresses, conventions and working sessions), and incentives. The number of companies that organised events in the meetings sector was 127. The sectors most represented in 2004 were the economical-commercial (30.2%), cultural (19.5%) and medical-sanitary (10.7%) sectors, with an increase of the cultural events.

The report reflects the great importance of the facilities and special services that the municipality can provide, a key fact in the selection of a destination. The study shows that some small municipalities are very active in business tourism as they have unique venues and accommodation equipped to hold corporate events, which can also be complemented with cultural and leisure activities in the same municipality. 80% of the participants, who stayed in three and four-star hotels, has solicited for gastronomic, tourist, cultural and shopping activities.

According to the BMT-CB report, the forecast for 2005 is very positive with regard to meetings, number of participants and expenditure with an expected increase of 20%.
